Free Flight is one branch of Model Aviation. Unlike a radio controlled model aircraft where the pilot is in control of the model while in flight, a free flight plane once launched, is not subject to any external control by its owner - its successful flight is based entirely on the builder's expertise in construction, trimming, weather assessment, aeronautical engineering, propulsion systems and only sometimes, just a little bit of luck! The free flight model's stability is built into it by its designer and constructor.
Free Flight models may be gliders or sailplanes launched by a tow line or hurled into the air, or powered by strands of rubber, batteries, compressed air, compressed carbon dioxide, liquid fuels, or solid fuels as used in rocket powered models. There are categories or types of F/F model that are only flown outdoors, as well as types that are flown indoors in large areas such as school halls, gyms, etc.
